The Bongles
The Bongles is a 2D side scrolling platformer based on the books and art style of Iain Piercy. The Bongles was created by a 7 man team consisting of 3 programmers, 3 artists and 1 designer.
This project had to follow a brief which stated that the game be targeted at 3-7 year olds, have short levels offering replay value and be a mobile game. During this project I mainly programmed character movement/interactions along with many of the interesting mechanics in the game such as the player being able to launch themselves out of cannons found in the levels/body slam/use wind tunnels. Due to the volume of 2D platforming games out there today, my team and I implemented a swipe based movement system which would keep the player more engaged as opposed to the usual on screen touch controls. I also took on additional tasks and undertook a big role in the design process of the game.
This project was a great learning experience as a 2D kids game would never be my genre of choice when creating a game. This resulted in me expanding my programming knowledge, improving my problem solving skills and offered valuable team working experience. The game was well received by Glasgow Caledonian University and was graded as an A.
